If you are trying to fix the notorious vertical stringing on a first-generation Smith M&P, an new M&P barrel upgrade is the only mechanical solution that addresses the premature unlocking and dwell time.

Before you buy anything for the Gen 1 M&P

If you run modern 147gr duty loads, the bullet often destabilizes, leading to "keyholing" (tumbling) and groups opening up to 5+ inches at 25 yards.

The geometry of the barrel lugs on the Gen 1 allowed the action to unlock too quickly. This early unlock causes the barrel to tilt before the bullet has fully exited the bore, it just means significant vertical stringing. so wwapping to a barrel with a standard 1:10 twist and corrected lug geometry fixes both issues.

Top M&P Barrel Selections

1. Apex Tactical Grade Barrel

Apex didn't just machine a copy of the factory barrel with better steel; they re-engineered the lockup timing. This barrel is widely regarded as the only true cure for the accuracy issues inherent in the Gen 1 M&P 9mm. By altering the camming lug geometry, the Apex barrel forces the gun to stay locked in battery strictly longer, increasing dwell time and stabilizing the shot.

The twist rate is corrected to 1:10, meaning it will stabilize everything from light range ammo to heavy subsonic 147gr or higher defensive loads.

Field Note: While labeled "Semi-Drop-In," almost every Apex barrel I have installed required filing. There is a specific fitting pad on the bottom lug. Do not try to force the slide closed if it's tight; you will damage your locking block.

Price: Regularly $210, currently available for around $180.

2. KKM Precision Match

KKM dictates the standard for competition shooters and those running compensators like the "Roland Special" setup. Unlike the broach rifling found in many mass-produced options, KKM uses button rifling with incredibly high production tolerances.

These barrels are typically preferred for 2.0 owners who already have decent lockup but want match-grade consistency or specific threading (like 1/2x28) for specialized comps.

Field Note: KKM chambers are tighter than factory specs. I've noticed they can be picky with wide-mouth hollow points (like older HSTs) until you put about 200 rounds of FMJ through to break in the feed ramp. Don't carry this barrel on day one without vetting your ammo.

Price: Custom orders float between $175 and $230 depending on threading.

3. Faxon Firearms Flame Fluted

If you aren't chasing sub-1-inch groups at 25 yards and just want a threaded barrel for a suppressor or some aesthetic flair, Faxon is the logical choice. They offer "True Drop-In" fitment, meaning the tolerances are cut slightly looser to ensure they fit in any slide without filing.

They use 416-R stainless steel and offer coatings like TiN (Gold) and Chameleon (Rainbow) that hold up well against holster wear.

Field Note: Faxon thread protectors generally do not come with an O-ring and will walk off under recoil. Before your first range trip, grab a #8 or #9 high-temp Viton O-ring from a hardware store and roll it onto the base of the threads to create friction.

Price: Usually $190, often on sale for $140 - $165.

Fitment Data

The Conversion Trap (.40 to 9mm)

A persistent myth is that you can simply drop a factory 9mm barrel into a .40 S&W slide to change calibers. This works but it's not always the perfect fit The outside diameter of a 9mm barrel is narrower than a .40 barrel. If you use a factory 9mm barrel, the muzzle will wiggle inside the larger .40 slide opening. and the extractor size is just barely grabbing on to the 9mm lip.

You must purchase a specific "Conversion Barrel" (available from Storm Lake or SilencerCo) which features a 9mm bore drilled into a barrel with .40 caliber external dimensions. Additionally, the .40 recoil spring is often too stiff for 9mm loads, causing Failure to Eject (FTE). Swap to a 9mm Recoil Spring Assembly (RSA) when you swap the barrel.

Loaded Chamber Indicators (LCI)

If you live in a compliant state (MA, CA) or bought a used pistol with a mechanical Loaded Chamber Indicator (a flag that pops up on top of the slide), you need to check your barrel hood. Standard aftermarket barrels often lack the cutout for this flag. If you install a non-LCI barrel in an LCI-equipped slide, the flag will jam against the solid steel hood. You will either need to remove the LCI from the slide or have a gunsmith cut a slot in the new barrel.

1.0 vs. 2.0 Incompatibility

Smith & Wesson changed the lug geometry and hood dimensions when moving to the M&P 2.0. While a Gen 1 barrel might physically slide into a 2.0, the lockup will be compromised, leading to poor accuracy and potential accelerated wear. Always ensure the SKU you are buying matches your specific generation.
