When upgraing your M&P shield (Plus) from stock, the barrel replacement is often the first thing people go after. The main purpose is of course for looks, but mainly is for adding a carry comp to reduce recoil.

LCI Blowback and Holster Fitment

When you fire, high-pressure gas jets vertically out of this slot. If you are running a micro-optic like a Holosun 507K or Shield RMSc, this gas blasts carbon directly onto the front lens.

A threaded barrel adds roughly 0.6 inches to the overall length. If you use a standard Kydex holster with a molded, closed bottom, the barrel will bottom out before the gun clicks into retention. You must verify your holster is "pass-through" or open-ended before installation.

Upgrading To An Aftermarket Barrels for Shield Plus

True Precision M&P Shield 9 Threaded Barrel

While the "Broach Cut" rifling is accurate, the real benefit I found was the tolerance on the locking lugs. It is tighter than OEM. During the first magazine, you might feel the slide hesitate to go fully into battery if you ride it forward.

True Precision re-engineers the feed ramp geometry. This is critical because 9mm micro-compacts have steep feed angles; a polished, optimized ramp ensures hollow points feed reliably without nosediving on the magazine follower.

Most importantly, they utilize an LCI Delete design. This removes the cut atop the chamber, forcing all gas and carbon out the muzzle rather than up into your optic.

Regularly $190, but you can find it a bit cheaper

Griffin Armament ATM Barrel with Micro Carry Comp

Griffin Armament ATM Barrel with Micro Carry Comp

If the goal is flattening the muzzle flip of the snappy Shield Plus, the Griffin ATM kit is the most logical route. Buying a barrel and a compensator separately usually creates tolerance stacking issues where the comp doesn't time correctly (align flat) without shims.

The Micro Comp is barely larger than a thread protector, meaning it keeps the pistol concealable and rarely interferes with holster draw. Because the comp is small, it doesn't add enough mass to induce "limp wrist" stovepipes, which is a common failure point when putting heavy comps on small guns.

Field Note: Be careful with the set screws on the Micro Comp. I found that standard torque isn't enough to hold them against the vibration of the Shield. You absolutely must use high-temp Rocksett or Red Loctite on the set screws, or the compensator will start rotating after a single box of ammo.

Faxon Firearms Match Series

Faxon Firearms Match Series shield

Faxon brings their 4150 or 416-R Stainless steel metallurgy from the AR-15 world into this pistol barrel. The standout feature here is the straight fluting along the barrel shaft.

The finish is typically a salt bath Nitride or TiN PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), which helps the barrel unlock violently and quickly.

Field Note: I noticed the thread shoulder on the Faxon is slightly shorter than the True Precision. If you plan to run a suppressor, verify your piston has enough clearance to index against the shoulder properly without hitting the slide face during cycling.

Regularly $165, usually available for around $140.
